Building Kaitiaki Intelligence Platforms: Positioning iwi as the national first-movers in precision, high-resolution environmental monitoring

August 2022

Kā Waimaero | Ngāi Tahu Centre seminar presented on 16 August 2022 by Dr John Reid at University of Canterbury.

Over the last few years there has been significant advances in environmental monitoring using satellites, drones, and other detectors. These technologies are rapidly dropping in cost and provide accurate and live feedback on the environmental impacts of Aotearoa’s agricultural and forestry industries. Iwi are well-positioned to invest in these technologies and retrieve constant and live feedback on the mauri of whenua, awa, hapua, and moana. With these technologies iwi could steer environmental policy-making according to their own values and lead the development of sustainable farming, fishing, and forestry operations. Furthermore, such technology platforms create the foundation for next-generation green markets grounded in indigenous ethics.
